So about 3 weeks ago, my fiance and I found two baby robins outside the gas station, they had fallen to the ground from the light fixture on the sign, from the previous storm. I wasn't gonna leave them there, so I took them in my hands and my fiance drove home. We put them in a basket and just started raising them... Everything was going well, even after a few days of caring for them they started getting feathers and they were as happy as can be.
Well, last night the birds were still sleeping, and I wanted to go check on them before bed (I wanted to play with them), but my fiance said it was ok. Well, this morning when he got up to feed them, around 8, he saw one of the birds was on the bottom of the cage... not moving. He touched the bird, and he was cold.
I can't stop crying, I even had to take the rest of the day off from work because I'm so upset, and so is he... But I have been crying nonstop since he told me.
We aren't sure what caused his mysterious death, we just have no idea. But, the other bird is in mourning and is just not himself, he only eats when we have to get him to. He is not chirping at all. Our other bird, was a loudmouth, he just would not shut up! He would chirp for hours on end, and was always so excited to see you. We were their parents and they know that. Not only that, they knew when they were being fed and when you opened the cage door, both would fly out either onto your arm or your lap and would fly to keep themselves up.
Also, if they were still in their cage, both would go nuts and fly around to your finger, holding onto the bars with their legs.
Any idea on what might have happened? We just don't know, both of them were fine yesterday, but then sometime in the middle of the night... Fiance checked on them around 11, they were both asleep.
So we went to my parent's house this morning before I first went to work, we wrapped him up, put him in a little tray, and gave him a proper burial, putting up a grave marker for him and a little bird statue to represent him. Then we both said silent prayers for our poor little bird.
I didn't know saving two baby birds and then having one die could have this much impact one me, but it hurts a lot. I know I'll feel better some day, but for now I'm in mourning, too.
Also, we were planning on taking them to my parent's garden to release them in a few days... Now we're gonna have to postpone letting the other one go for another week or so.
