Oh you have really hit the nail there!

This brings me to my favourite ever experience in me mam and dad's old house, which as I'm sure you'll be aware by now was VERY haunted.

The house was a normal semi-detached (not sure what the rest of the world calls them, but thats an English term for two houses jouned at the middle, but with no other property on either outer side) place. Built in the 30's, Accrington Red Brick, totally unremarkable and typical of the area in every respect, save for a couple of things:

The back bedroom -my room - overlooked a church; albeit one built as recently as the 50's and , slightly more disconcertingly Carleton Cemetery - the largest graveyard in Lancashire if you don't include Manchester and Liverpool which are now technically not in the county any more! Now whether the house's proximity to the crematorium was a significant factor will always be a point of conjecture, and I guess I'll never know for sure but the story I am about to tell is true!

It hapened, as did many things in the late 1980's. On the particular night in question I awoke, as I often did to a feeing of terror and apprehension in the middle of the night. It was an exceptionally clear night as I recal, and in those days I often slept with the curtains wide open, with the moon as clear as you can say. On this particular occasion though I was aware that I was far from alone in the room. There seemed to be a malevolence there I was totally unfamiliar with, and I could makeout a night terror, a huge, black shape-shifter, the size of Mike Tyson glaring at me from the end of the bed.

I WAS FLIPPING PETRIFIED!!!!

My folks were away in Perth, Oz visiting my uncle, so I was totally alone. The bible was in another room (I am fundamentally Christian with a very open mind and quasi-pagan leanings incidentally) as was a knife my father's Royal Navy Padre had blessed when he served on board HMS Eagle, an aircraft carrier in the 40's. So, my only course of action was to pray! Really, really pray. I closed my eyes and prayed hard. Simple as that.


When I eventually dared open my eyes I found the 'mood' of oppression to be gone, as was the black form. I scoured the room for anything untoward and then my eyes were drawn to the shadow the moon had cast through the window...


...In the clearness of the night it had cast its beams onto the wooden window frame and projected a perfect crucifix onto the far wall at the foot of the bed, the up-beam forming the vertical, bisected three quarters of the way up by the horizontal beam!

Comforted, and reassured that the praying had done the trick I rapidly resumed my slumber and slept through to a glorious spring morning.

When I awoke I immediately remembered the unusual happenings of just a few hours previous, and smiling with a sense of comfort and contentment I looked at the window through which the moon had painted the reassuring vision. That's when it hit me!














There WAS NO 'DOWN' BEAM. Never had been! Just an unbroken pane of glass with two small skylights near the top.

Make of that what you will
